Take a Slice Out of Hunger, Charity Golf Classic to Benefit Joppa

Gusto Pizza will once again host its “Take A Slice Out Of Hunger” event, which includes a Low Country Shrimp Boil and Charity Golf Classic. The community is invited to participate in the event to help alleviate hunger and homelessness in Central Iowa. All proceeds will benefit Joppa.

The Charity Golf Classic is a four-person, best-shot format. Golfers can also participate in a variety of activities, such as a meet-and-greet with the Blue Ribbon Bacon Queen, hole-in-one prizes on various holes, and a chance to mingle with Mark Calcavecchia the 2015 Principal Charity Classic Champion. A post-event reception will offer light appetizers, drinks and a program. The cost is $140 per person; $560 per foursome.

For those who want to participate in the event but do not play golf, Gusto Pizza Co. will host a dinner the night before on Sunday, June 4 at Peace Tree Brewing Co. in Des Moines. The event will include a Low Country Shrimp Boil, a presentation from Joppa and live music from The Maytags.

Low Country Shrimp Boils originated in Georgia and South Carolina. The meal is traditionally prepared by cooking a variety of ingredients—including corn on the cob, potatoes, sausage and shrimp—all in one pot and then placed on tables to serve. These meals were known for community gatherings, bringing everyone together for a cause or celebration.

Gusto Pizza Co. is celebrating its fifth year hosting this event. “Take a Slice Out of Hunger” is part of a broader campaign designed to bring small businesses together in an effort to give back to the community.

“My partners and I were introduced to Joppa several years ago by our friend, Aimee Smith. We were very impressed with the Joppa mission and wanted to be a part of it,” said Josh Holderness, Gusto Pizza Co. owner.

“As restaurateurs, we thought, ‘This is what we do best, we feed people!’ This desire to become involved created the ‘Take a Slice out of Hunger’ campaign,” Holderness said. “Now in its fifth year, we are excited that the ‘Take a Slice out of Hunger’ Charity Golf Classic will solely benefit Joppa and its clients. The Gusto Pizza Co. family looks forward to strengthening this partnership for many years to come.”

All proceeds benefit Joppa, Joppa would like to thank Gusto Pizza for hosting this event and choosing Joppa as their charity of choice. Gusto also supports the Iowa Food Bank, Central Iowa Shelter & Services and many other organizations dedicated to ending hunger and homelessness.
