Joppa Prepares for New Wave of Homelessness

Homelessness is increasing. Job loss during the pandemic combined with the affordable housing crisis has forced more people onto the streets. In fact, one in three homeless individuals in Central Iowa are first-time homeless. We expect another wave of people experiencing homelessness when the eviction moratorium expires. 

Joppa has continued to do what we do best: Serving people in need, building relationships, working with our partners and providing critical resources. But our community needs more. That’s why we’re building the new Homeless Resource Center, and you can help open its doors. 

About the Homeless Resource Center 

The first of its kind in Iowa, the Homeless Resource Center will provide a one-stop-shop for people experiencing homelessness in our community. Visitors will find a welcoming environment with a public restroom, water filling station, coffee, food, microwave, clothing, hygiene and survival items, computer access, phone chargers and more. A dedicated center supervisor, trained volunteers and a full-time case manager will be on hand to address each client’s needs. 

“Joppa is known for our weekly outreach—going out to serve those living under bridges, in tents and in vehicles. With the addition of the Homeless Resource Center, we can also offer support at our own facility,” said Joe Stevens, Joppa CEO and Cofounder. “The center will significantly expand our reach, as well as provide a central location for people looking to find assistance and resources.” 

Help Us Open the Center 

Construction of the Homeless Resource Center is nearly complete, but we need your help getting over the finish line. We are still fundraising to cover construction costs and staffing as well as signage, a communications/security system, a bicycle rack and repair station, benches, lockers and more. 

“With homelessness increasing, our community needs the Homeless Resource Center now more than ever,” Stevens said. “We’re so grateful for the generous support we’ve already received, and we’re asking for help to complete this final stage.”
