Introducing ‘Tabitha’s House’: The First Tiny Home

The first house is completed for the Joppa Village, a planned community of affordable tiny homes with support and resources.

The house was named “Tabitha’s House” in recognition of the concepts of “community building community” and “doing good and helping the poor,” from the following Bible verse: “In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha; she was always doing good and helping the poor… (Acts 9:36)”

The house number is 936, in honor of all the volunteers who came together to make this vision a reality.

Joppa partnered with individuals and groups in the community to build Tabitha’s House:

• BSB Design provided pro-bono design consultation support and designs for the home
• Todd and Carla Murray sponsored materials for the build
• Don and Carol Hunold provided the trailer
• Rich Wheeldon and students in construction and CAD classes at Norwalk Schools built the house in a few weeks
• Jessica Gerheart provided interior design consultation and decoration
• The Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute team, led by Joe Feldmann, provided consultation on design, coordinated the build with Norwalk and supported funding
• Eggers Home provided funding to support tour items, from hitches and jacks to marketing materials
• Becca Baum provided graphic design and marketing materials for the tour
• Many Joppa volunteers provided planning support for the home

Joppa is planning a tour to allow the community to see the home and learn about the potential of tiny homes as a solution to homelessness. We are excited to garner additional support to build more homes.
