The homes include kitchenettes and bathrooms, are solar-ready, and can be panel-built by local corporations, churches and schools.
Joppa has introduced three different designs for the Loft Cottages, including one that is ADA-compliant.
Each resident can stay in a Loft Cottage for 6 to 24 months—which, compared to the 30-90 days allowed in a shelter, will provide a prolonged period of time to find employment and housing.
There is a reason people become homeless. It can be medical reasons, mental health challenges, substance abuse, bad decisions or bad luck. Having a personal space to secure belongings can help people work through their issues with privacy, dignity and independence.
Loft Cottages will be located in a safe, gated community that provides a safe place for people working their way out of homelessness. In this village, they can gain a source of income and overcome other housing barriers before moving into a permanent home.
The village will provide immediate housing for 50 people currently living under bridges, in tent and vehicles, and on the streets. A resident manager will be on-site 24 hours a day, and residents will be required to follow a good conduct policy.
Residents will also take part in care and upkeep of the village. In addition to basic needs, there will also be micro-business opportunities such as a community garden, bee operation and chickens.
Ideal properties for the village are within one mile of a grocery or convenience store and bus stop, with potential jobs and services nearby.
Joppa has studied best practices across the U.S. and amalgamated the most successful ideas into the village plan. We are currently working with city and county officials to secure a suitable location in Polk County.
