Many families are just one paycheck away from being on the streets. In fact, half of extremely low-income households in Iowa spend more than 50% of their income on housing. That leaves little to pay for food, clothing, transportation and medical care—which puts them at risk of housing instability and homelessness.
Joppa Cottage Homes will provide permanent housing that’s truly affordable for seniors, veterans, disabled individuals and others living on fixed or part-time incomes, including those who are formerly homeless.
Cottage Homes will be practical alternatives to apartment buildings and other traditional low-income housing.
Rent for these fully furnished cottages will range from $300-$600 per month, compared to the $927 average monthly cost for apartments in Des Moines (according to Rent Cafe).
Joppa completed its first Cottage Home in 2019. Read about the ribbon cutting and our first Cottage Home resident, Will Winder, in “A New Home.”
Although the pandemic delayed our efforts, Joppa is working with the city of Des Moines to build additional Cottage Homes in the future.
